Why a Dog? The Thinking Behind Pixel

The difference between teaching children and adults about cyber

We get asked this a lot. Why a dog, and not a robot, a superhero, or a straightforward safety poster on the classroom wall? The answer came from watching what actually works on a young child, which understandably turns out to be quite different from what works on an adult in a training room, even though the underlying goal is identical.

Pixel is a Dedicated Online Guardian, loyal, warm, and entirely on Fizz's side. He never lectures her. He earns a gold star on his collar every time she learns something, and that small, visible reward does more to embed a lesson than any list of rules we could have written instead. Children remember Pixel earning his stars. They don't remember rules, not for long, and neither do most adults.

That's really the whole design philosophy in one sentence: information alone rarely changes behaviour, whether you're five or fifty. Anyone who has sat through a mandatory security awareness module and forgotten it by lunchtime already knows this. What sticks is a character you care about, a small sense of progress, and a story you'll happily sit through again. Pixel is our answer to the same problem your organisations spend real budget trying to solve: how do you make people actually remember the thing you've told them?

We don't have a tidy answer for how to give every corporate policy a loyal dog and a gold star system. But we'd argue the instinct behind Pixel, reward the behaviour, don't just state the rule- is worth stealing wherever you can.

Why we've featured these books

We're pleased to have been chosen by Sam and Steve to support them in raising awareness of these creatively written and beautifully illustrated children's books across both our Channel and Buyer communities.  We think it's important to help more technology leaders, parents, teachers and schools discover practical books that can start important conversations before problems exist.
