Email Security: Features that protect you from the human factor

It’s not that there’s a lack of tools designed to detect, prevent and protect against phishing attempts, so a successful hit relies on human response.

Fundamentally, here lies the problem:  The bad guys need the good guys to behave in a certain way.  The good guys want and need to be able to do their jobs, and in doing so, they need to be able to click on links.

No matter how much you train staff, the product features offered by your email security provider are king.  The more you have, the better you’ll fare.  Sometimes that can come at a price many can’t afford due to the nature of licensing options.

Security features that take the people out of the risk

We’ve put together a list of the most essential email security features you should consider when selecting an email security solution. We then looked at the 10 leading email security providers to see how they stacked up against our list.

Lack of standardised assessment on ‘Detection Rates’

We wanted to use ‘Detection Rates’ to qualify providers, but there’s no standardised assessment method available and using VBspam testing scores didn’t work, because some providers haven’t tested since 2018. Also, some leading providers use their own testing/assessment reports, but we couldn’t validate them or ensure impartiality across all providers.

Benchmark for this assessment

We’ve taken Computing Magazine’s criteria used for judging their ‘2020 Computing Best Email Security Solution’ category.

Here are the 15 essential features they think you need to consider:

01.

Option for On Premise, Virtual or Physical archiving

Options for self-hosting the solution

02.

Option forCloud/SaaS

Options for a Cloud Hosted Solution

03.

BEC

04.

Price

Once you’ve compared features, you’ll need to think about cost and what you get for your money. Many features don’t come as standard and the bill can rise considerably, so we’ve prepared the following chart to help you choose the best balance of features and cost.

Our summary

There’s a lot to consider if you’re investing in a new platform or planning a move, so our take here is:

  • The best all round provider was Libraesva, with all 15 features in their standard subscription.
  • Microsoft 365 was surprisingly our worst provider, but do remember that it’s primarily a workplace automation product and not an email security tool. Email security is a specialisation, so go to the experts.
  • If changing providers it’s not always as easy as you’d imagine, with some of the top providers charging hefty fees if you want your data back – it’s your data and we struggled with that ‘feature’.
