Security Matters

Say “hello” to extra skills and resource with a Virtual SOC (VSOC)

New breed, highly competitive cloud technology providers combine with managed security services to offer otherwise unaffordable services for SMB’s.

Virtual Security Operations Centres (VSOC) services give businesses all the benefits of a SOC, at a fraction of the price

This VSOC service is compelling in the current climate, with the increase in remote and mobile working challenging even the best in our security teams. They can be very affordable and easy to implement offering a whole range of benefits.

A VSOC can make or break a business’s ability to detect, analyse, and respond to incidents in a timely fashion.

A critical aspect of this growth in digital business is the increased risk to data and assets, with regulatory changes placing even greater emphasis on the need for appropriate security of networks and data.

Businesses have been forced to reassess their approach and we’ve seen a growth in the trend towards managed services, where companies choose to outsource both resource and risk and, most importantly, responsibility.

So what are the triggers to look for in deciding to go down the road towards managed security services?
1. Capability

Even big enterprises struggle to keep on top of their security challenges, so its no reflection on the capability of SME IT teams if you decide to outsource. In fact, it may be demonstrate a greater awareness of the importance of security to your business and the need for best in class security frameworks.

2. Bandwidth

Not only is the threat landscape continually changing, you also have to be dedicated in your approach. Threats can surface at any time, so your security measures must be 24/7. Security must be ‘Business as Usual’, not on the ‘Also’ list.

3. Risk

Every business has a cyber risk but, for some, the risk is far greater. Risk is not just loss of data or denial of access, there are now significant regulatory obligations with just as significant penalties, reputation is at risk and the cumulative impact can be the difference between business continuity and business failure.

4. Cost

You need to balance the cost of security over the cost of a breach or ransomware attack and the damage they will have on your business. We don’t believe that security should come at any cost, but it should be up there with the big decision you make.

Managed security does provide a more structured approach, with a comprehensive security framework and just as structured fees that you can budget for.

5. Responsibility

This is not a cop-out. With security growing in its impact on our businesses, choosing to place its stewardship in the hands of a 3rd party helps remove the risk and the responsibility. Security is a specialisation and we’re seeing an increase in the introduction of outsourced specialisation into the workplace. But be warned, It’s essential that responsibility comes with accountability. If you chose a managed security service, make sure you have the right safeguards in place in any agreement.

6. Performance

One of the biggest reasons quoted by companies choosing a managed security service is the improvement in operational efficiency they achieve as a result. Placing the security of your business with a manged service provider releases your teams to get on with business as usual – no more roadblocks or delays that reduce performance.
